Of course, one has to be a good sport and be a fair player, but when I was a swimmer, I used to train at Fordham University (New York).
Vince Lombardi, a great NFL coach, coached there and I used to love reading one of his famous quotes written on the walls:
“WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING, IT’S THE ONLY THING!”
That is a great quote to live by, if you’re trying to achieve something difficult or at least worthwhile pursuing!

I don’t say embrace trouble. That’s as bad as treating it as an enemy. But I do say meet it as a friend, for you’ll see alot of it and had better be on speaking terms with it. Oliver Wendell Holmes. JR.

“People are unreasonable and self centered – love them anyway, if you do good, people will accuse you selfish motives – do good anyway, the good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow – do good anyway, honesty and transparency make you vulnerable – be honest and transparent anyway, what you spend years building may be destroyed overnight – build anyway, people who really want help may attack you if you help them – help them anyway, give the world the best you have and you may get hurt – give the world your best anyway.” – Mother Theresa

C. S. Lewis is a veritable legend…. a goldmine of great quotes.
My favourite:
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
Other great ones
“Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.”
“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.”
“If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.”
“The safest road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.”
“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”
“God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”
And finally, ones that I find very personally applicable, as a Thirty-year-old, tea-drinking musician:
“You can’t get a cup of tea big enough to suit me.”
“Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.”
“Thirty was so strange for me. I’ve really had to come to terms with the fact that I am now a walking and talking adult.”
